Congratulations. You’re having two babies! Double the fun and twice the number of names to find!

Don’t worry. We’ve got you!

We are fascinated by twins and absolutely love hearing the name options that parents pick for their babies.

The name or names you choose will be with your children for life and be a huge part of their identity, along with their sibling!

We think the perfect balance comes when you find names that work together while also allowing for individuality.

Hopefully, the thousands of name choices at Name Baby Name, which include origin, meaning, cultural references and even songs, will help you make the perfect choice for both your babies.

We’ve created hundreds of original lists for inspiration too which may even introduce you to names you hadn’t heard of but could prove just the ticket for your twins.

We’d love to know what you think of our suggestions, and of course the names you choose for your two new little people once you are a fully-fledged #BabyNamer. Please get in touch at lucindakate@namebabyname.com. We read and reply to every message!

Remember, these twins are your babies and it is your decision. As long as you pick names you love and can be proud of, you’ve made exactly the right choices.

Enjoy naming!

Things to Consider When Choosing Names for Twins

Combination names: For the first part of their lives, your twins will literally come as a pair. Not just on the day they arrive, but when they are thought of and spoken about by family, friends, at daycare and at school.
Some twin parents love alliteration and use the same first initial, some look for melody or rhyming when the names are said together, and some look for a shared theme such as {names inspired by nature} or {space-inspired baby names}.
All can work really well. Just remember that your children won’t always be stuck to each other’s sides so just like the two of them as they grow up, their names need to stand alone.

Who’s who?: If you’re having twins of the same sex, not only do you need to decide a name for each, but you need to decide which twin is having which name. Will it be based on order of arrival? Or will you wait to see their little faces? If your twins are a boy-girl mix, will you pick traditionally masculine and feminine names rather than gender neutral options to avoid confusion about who is who, especially at school and college.

Meaning and Origin: You may wish to choose names which have complementary or similar meanings or origins. We have complete A-Z lists of {girls names}, {boys names} and {gender neutral names} and every one has the origin and meaning included. We hope that helps!

Nicknames: All of the names we have listed also include the possible nicknames your children could be given. It’s important to consider how their name could be changed, both in a positive and potentially negative way!

Initials: We always recommend avoiding initial combinations that spell something dodgy, and suggest expectant parents check the combination of first initial combined with last name as that could well appear in future work email addresses! For twins you can also consider whether you want them to have the same initials, or even the same middle initial to connect them.

Original vs Popular: It’s rare that twin parents pick one popular name and one that’s much less common, as they look to give both twins the same treatment. Whether or not it’s two traditional names you are looking for or two more unique options, our inspiration lists should help you out!

Cultural considerations: Some parents look to honor their heritage when it comes to naming their children, and with twins you get twice as much chance.

Length: Name length is important, and for twins it is typical for names to be the same length. Remember syllables are important here, the number of letters doesn’t always denote the length when it comes to saying the name out loud.

Spelling and pronunciation: We always recommend opting for intuitive spelling and pronunciation. It’s not that we don’t support individuality, we just know a lifetime of spelling out the name and other people getting it wrong can be tough! All of our name explainers include the pronunciation which we hope helps your search.

School life: How will the names you’re thinking of work for your children at nursery and school – both when they are together and separated?

Adult life: How will your twins feel about their names when they are adults? Do the names work individually for graduation, on a resume, at a wedding or on a business card?

Top Tips for Choosing Names for Your Twins

Make a Shortlist: Have a few options for each so you can make the best choice and have a backup.

Say them out loud: Try saying the names out loud to make sure they flow well individually and together. We’d recommend picking names that are sufficiently different that they don’t sound the same, and not too much of a tongue twister that you stumble over them when you say them together. Or shout them for that matter. That will happen too!

Write them out: Take pen to paper and write out each child’s chosen name to see how you feel about them in black and white. Once you’ve made your choices, you’ll need to get used to this!

Pair them perfectly: Combine your first name choices with your surname. You might want short first names if you have a longer last name, or vice versa. Think how middle names could balance out the sounds, or potentially provide a connection between your two babies.

Double-barrel: We suggest parents consider combining two names in most cases, but when it comes to twins you may well want to stick to one each!

Google your name choices: Type your selections into the search engine and see  who comes up!

Website domain: Type in each child’s potential full name.com at {GoDaddy.com} and see if their eponymous site is available. If you’re set on your names and no-one else has bought the domain, it’s yours for the taking!

Email addresses: Again, once you’ve made your final choices you might want to register each child’s name at gmail. Some parents write an email each year to each child on their birthday as a modern day memory book. We love this idea!

Keep it Secret: Consider not sharing your name choices until the babies have arrived. That way there’s no room for feedback!

Or

Ask Opinions: Just because you welcome opinions on your shortlisted names, doesn’t mean the comments you get will always be welcome. We urge caution with this!

Will you share your twins’ names before they arrive? Did you go for matching or completely different choices?
